Some mornings you just randomly wake up with a craving for cream filled cookies, deep dark chocolate brownies and mummy’s old-fashioned butterscotch cake. Driving to work you can’t help yourself but imagining passing the local pattiserie on your way home or spending the evening cooking up some of your favorite sweet carby dishes. But then… out of nowhere… a little angel pops up on your right shoulder and whispers: “Hey… wooowww.. lady!! It’s the new year… Remember what we agreed on this time?” And of course you do… :-// Unfortunately.
This year was going to be about abs and ass! Or at least, that’s what you decided in December, when your Christmas dinner blowout made your pants rip when gracefully sitting down at the dinner table. So yes, as horrific as it may seem right now, this year you’ll give yourself no more chances for sugar filled treats and cakes with names starting with cheese or butter.
So, time to discover the healthy carbohydrate kitchen it is! Because there IS actually a way to eat, enjoy and feel satisfied, without adding a little layer of fat over those sexy abs of yours, or making you feel like any less sexy than you actually are.
But what do you eat when the premenstrual sweet-cravings overtake your common sense, regardless of all your good intentions?
Here’s a start, for a simple sweet and warming breakfast bowl, that at the same time flushes toxins our of your system.
SWEET BUCKWHEAT MASH WITH BLUEBERRIES AND FRESH ALMOND PULP, SERVED WITH HOMEMADE ALMOND MILK
* One cup of buckwheat groats
* 1 cup of rice milk
* Spring or filtered water
* A handful of frozen blueberries
* 1 tspn of cinnamon powder
* 1 generous tspn of organic coconut oil
* 5 jumbo almonds soaked overnight
For the almond milk:
* 1 handful of almonds (soaked overnight)
* a big glass of spring water
* some cinnamon powder to taste (optional)
Make the almond milk by blending almonds, water and cinnamon in the blender into a smooth white milk. Use a strainer or cheesecloth to separate the milk from the pulp and set aside while you prepare your porridge.
Cook the buckwheat groats with the water, rice milk, blueberries, almonds and cinnamon for 10 minutes until it forms a smooth porridge. Set aside for 5 minutes with the lid on, then scoop into a bowl and top with the some leftover almond pulp (from your almond milk) and a spoon of coconut oil.
Enjoy this deliciously sweet and nourishing breakfast in the sun with a cup of green tea 🙂 That’s what I did, and it was yummie!
Today a little bit of information about a condition called hypoglycemia, or chronic low blood sugar. Many of us suffer from mild forms of hypoglycemia nowadays, simply because our diets have become out of balance, with an overload of refined carbs and sugar, known to upset blood sugar levels in mad ways!
In order to stay healthy, it is of great importance to keep blood sugar levels stable. However, with our modern day diets as mentioned before, combined with a lack of physical exercise, this might be a bit of a challenge! Our bodies simply do not know anymore how to deal with the excess of sugars in our system. Therefore it starts overproducing a hormone called insulin, which converts sugar into fat and brings blood sugar levels down. The result is hypoglycemia, AND the accompanied storage of fat.
I believe that keeping blood sugar levels stable, can positively affect your ability to lose weight. Eating a diet high in whole grains (oats, rice, millet, quinoa), lean protein and vegetables will help you to keep blood sugar levels stable throughout the day.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia are:
- Blurred vision
- Foggy brain
- Problems to concentrate
- Feeling spaced out or dizzy
- Feeling shaky or like you’re going to faint
- Cravings for sweet food
- Chronic tiredness
Now what can you do to cure the condition?
- Eat whole foods and avoid refined products of all kind
- Avoid eating foods with a high sugar content like dried fruits
- Fruit consumption should be limited, and when eating fruit always combine it with some protein, like a few almonds or walnuts
- Fruit juices are best to be avoided due to their high sugar content
- Eat slowly and enjoy your food
- Eating a big breakfast with some slow released carbs can help you to keep blood sugar levels stable throughout the day Oats, rice or any other form of porridge are great for this
- Eat plenty of lean protein. Protein keeps blood sugar levels stable and helps you to eat less and feel full for longer
- Take chlorella. Chlorella is a whole food made from algue and has a high protein content. Chew a few tablets with each meal and feel the difference
- Eat regularly and make sure you bring a healthy snack wherever you go
One thing that is often overlooked in articles about health stuff, is the mental cause behind physical problems. One of my favorite teachers Louise L. Hay says that Hypoglycemia is caused by not being able to deal with the burdens of life. One useful affirmation (a positive statement which you can repeat to yourself over and over again) could be: “I now choose to make my life light and easy and joyful!”
